Thickeners

Thickeners are commonly used near the end of a mineral processing circuit to dewater tailings and product to a degree sufficient to feed the sludge into a filter press, centrifuge, or other secondary dewatering machine. Thickeners have a large cylindrical tank with a top-center-mounted rotating mechanism that gently spins rakes and paddles to agitate sludge and prevent settling of solids on the bottom of the tank, except at the lowest point. At the lowest point, a discharge tube with a pump feeds sludge from the thickener down-circuit.

Clarifiers are also displayed above. Typically, clarifiers receive overflow from a thickener and serve as a settling basin for the solids, so the operation can produce relatively clear water free of problematic suspended solids.
