Crushing is typically the first phase of size reduction at a mining, mineral processing, recycling, or aggregates facility. Primary crushers commonly consist of jaw crushers or gyratory crushers. These machines crush rock from the mine down to a few inches in dimension. Secondary and tertiary crushers are typically cone crushers, or vertical or horizontal shaft impactors, sometimes hammermills or chain mills. These crushers are used to produce feed for grinding circuits, heap leaching, or oftentimes aggregates and road base.
Crushing stages are often separated by vibrating rock screens, conveyors, hoppers, and/or apron feeders used to transfer product from one stage to another.
